Gospel Reflection
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you all had a faith-filled Easter and safe and happy long weekend, spending time with your children, family and friends. May the Risen Lord who is present to you, fill your hearts with joy during this Easter season.
Welcome to Week 10, Term One. It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of Term One. As we come to the end of Term One, I would like to acknowledge the effort of our students at St John’s and thank them for the commitment they have all shown to their learning and the care they show their peers and staff. I would like to thank the staff for their ongoing professionalism and dedication to planning high-quality learning experiences for our students. Thank you to all parents and carers for the ongoing support you provide to our staff, we are very grateful for your partnership at St John's. Thank you to Fr. Francis for his guidance and support and for the time he provides the students and staff of St John's.
It was fabulous to see our Year 6 students' smiling faces as they returned from their overnight excursion to Canberra. A huge thank you to Ms Angela Boyd-Skinner, Mrs Rachel Mackie, Mrs Jacinda Blomley, Mrs Jen Di-Leo, Mrs Ann Lackersteen, Mr Lino Madaschi and Mr Jeff De Battista for accompanying our students. The Year 6 school excursion was an opportunity for our Year 6 students to learn about the importance of leadership, collaboration and develop further leadership strategies to support their significant leadership roles at St John's. I would like to congratulate our Year 6 students for their excellent behaviour, companionship, collaboration and maturity they displayed throughout the overnight excursion.
Whole School Community Events
As I mentioned in our Week 8 school newsletter, whole school events foster a sense of belonging and community spirit among students, staff, parents and carers. These events encourage interactions outside the classroom setting, allowing students, staff, parents and carers to connect and build relationships that strengthen the school's community fabric. The recent school disco and Easter Hat parade were examples of the community coming together and our students experiencing a sense of belonging and community spirit. I would like to thank Mrs Jodie Maloney and the St John's Parents and Friends Association, the parent helpers and the St John's staff for their organisation and support of the school disco.
The Easter Hat and Hair Parade and Easter Liturgy celebrate the joy of the season and reflect on the spiritual significance of Easter, and to gather as a community and showcase the creativity of all the lovely Easter Hats.
At St John’s, we aspire to create a learning community that builds and maintains collaborative partnerships with parents and the broader community, which enhances student learning and well-being outcomes. I would like to thank parents and carers for participating in the various initiatives we have implemented this term which have provided opportunities to share information between school and home to complement learning across both settings. The initiatives have included:
Student Information Notes were distributed to parents and carers in Week 2. This provided an opportunity for parents and carers to share information with the classroom teacher highlighting your child’s strengths and other relevant information. Thank you to those parents and carers who have returned the student information sheets.
Parent and Carer Grade Information Sessions were shared with parents and carers in Week 3. The Parent and Carer Grade Information Sessions provided an opportunity to further understand the content of the school year's learning for each grade and the expectations, key dates and information pertinent to learning. The PowerPoint used to facilitate the content of the Parent and Carer Grade Information Sessions has been shared with parents and carers.
Student English and Mathematics Assessment of Learning were shared with parents and carers throughout the term. Students brought home student samples of Assessment of Learning in English and Mathematics following the completion of a sequence of learning. The purpose of this process was to provide ongoing information to parents and carers outlining your child’s progress in particular strands in English and mathematics.
Kindergarten Best Start Meetings were an opportunity for Kindergarten teachers to meet with kindergarten parents and carers to discuss the learnings gained from the Kindergarten Best Start Assessments. Strengths and learning goals were discussed for each student.
Individual Parent / Carer and Teacher Learning Conversations will be facilitated throughout the remainder of the term. This will be opportunity to share relevant information about individual student’s academic, spiritual, wellbeing and behaviour needs.
Collaborative Meetings for those students who have a Personalised Plan will be an opportunity to discuss the goals which are set for individual students and adjustments to learning which are being made to allow academic, social and behavioural growth.
At St John’s, we certainly value the relationship and partnership we have with our parents and carers. In this partnership, the responsibility for student’s learning, wellbeing and faith development is shared between parents and carers as the first and primary educators of their child and the school community. Thank you to our parents and carers for this wonderful partnership.
World Autism Awareness Day
On Thursday, 4th April, the St John’s school community will recognise a very important day, World Autism Awareness Day. World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognised day on April 2 every year, encouraging member states of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about people with Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the world.
On Thursday, we are acknowledging World Autism Awareness Day by inviting our whole school community to wear rainbow mufti for the day. The choice to dress up in rainbow mufti has been made to symbolise the spectrum of colours in a rainbow that represent the wide range of abilities and talents of people with autism. We are each unique and the importance of inclusion and respect of the other is a virtue that is held in high regard at St John’s.
Winter School Uniform
Thank you to parents and carers for the care you take to ensure that your child is in the correct school uniform. During the first three weeks of Term 2 parents and carers can decide if the summer or winter school uniform is suitable for your child to wear dependant on the weather. The formal change over date for students to wear their winter uniform is Monday 13th May.

Term One Teacher and Parent/Carer Learning Conversations
The Teacher and Parent/Carer Learning Conversations are an opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and growth students have made in the first term of the 2024 school year. Throughout this week and next week, many parents and carers will meet with teachers to discuss the attainment and growth of their child/ children in their faith, learning and wellbeing. This will be an opportunity for teachers, parents and carers to communicate openly and to share detailed information about our students’ learning and wellbeing and to celebrate the many achievements of our students.
I would like to acknowledge and thank those parents and carers who have already engaged in learning conversations, as this has enabled teachers, parents and carers to provide each other feedback and collaborate so that our students can continue to experience growth in their faith, learning and wellbeing.
I wish you a great week ahead.
Yours in Faith and Learning,
Mrs Michelle Rodwell
Principal

Holy Week
To commemorate Holy Week last week, we prayed the Stations of the Cross together as a school community. It was a reminder of the great sacrifice Jesus gave for us. I thank the students involved in the liturgy as well as all students for their prayerful reverence throughout the liturgy.

Thank you to Mrs Sharpe and 5B for assisting Fr Francis in filling 1000 small bottles with water. The water was then blessed and the bottles given out at Easter services

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Easter Raffle - bringing in donations of Easter eggs and/or buying/selling raffling tickets. The generosity of our St John’s school community is truly amazing. We raised $5318 through the raffle, $365.20 through class mission boxes - a grand total of $5683.20. What an amazing achievement!!! All money goes to Caritas Australia to help support the wonderful work they do.
Season of Easter
Lent has finished, and we are now in the season of Easter. On Sunday, we celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus, a day that gives us great hope. We will celebrate this great day with a liturgy in the Church on Thursday, April 4th, at 12:00 p.m.
As we embark upon the Easter season, we are reminded of the profound significance it holds within the Catholic faith. Easter, the most sacred celebration in the liturgical calendar, commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, triumphantly marking the culmination of Lenten preparations and the beginning of a period of rejoicing and renewal. For Catholics, this season extends beyond Easter Sunday, encompassing fifty days of joyful reflection known as the Easter season. During this time, we reflect on the transformative power of Christ's resurrection, embracing themes of hope, redemption, and new life. Through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity, we are called to deepen our faith and embody the teachings of Christ, spreading his message of love and salvation to all. As we journey through this sacred season together, may we be inspired by the promise of Easter and embrace its message of hope and renewal in our lives and communities.
Mass to Celebrate the Feast of St Joseph — Friday 22 March
On Friday 22nd March Years 3-5 attended our Paraish Mass commemorating the Feast of St. Joseph. At the conclusion of Mass, Sr Narelle spoke to us about the significance of St Joseph. This was then followed by a special blessing of the Statue of St Joseph outside the Church. This statue has a lot of history for St John’s. It was orginally across the road when St Ann’s College was there.
Here are a few of Sr Narelle’s words:
Some of the qualities of Saint Joseph are that he is: a protector, caring, good, humble, trusting, patient, a man of faith and a man of action. Perhaps take a moment to think about a quality that you might identify with Joseph. Now, take a moment to think about a quality of Saint Joseph that you would like to develop more in your own life.
These qualities of Saint Joseph are those that provided Saint Mary MacKillop the basis for her confidence that “God will take care of all of us.” This same confidence that Mary had in God’s Providence challenges all of us to trust in a ‘good God’, to listen deeply to the word of God spoken in our hearts and to respond with love in today’s world.
Below is an image of the ‘Sleeping Joseph.’ Often God spoke to Joseph while he was asleep. When he awoke he did whatever he needed to in order to protect and care for his family. While we sleep, we relax, we let go of our worries and trust that when we wake, our God will be there leading, guiding and protecting us for whatever the day will bring.
“IN ST JOSEPH’S CARE I LEAVE YOU” — These words were spoken by St Mary MacKillop on the feast of St Joseph when in 1866 Mary put on a simple black dress, became Sister Mary and thus began the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

The Feast of the Annunciation — 8 April
The Feast of the Annunciation is usually celebrated on March 25th every year. This year, however, as March 25th is the Monday of Holy Week, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord is transferred to Monday, April 8. On the Feast of the Annunciation we celebrate the profound moment in Christian tradition when the angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear the Son of God. This event marks the beginning of the Incarnation, the belief that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, took on human flesh. It is a celebration of hope, faith, and the divine intervention in human history. As we reflect on this significant feast, let us consider the courage and obedience of Mary, whose "yes" to the angel's message changed the course of salvation history. May this feast inspire us to embrace God’s own calling to us.
2024 — The Year of the Prayer
Earlier this year, Pope Francis announced the Year of Prayer 2024 in preparation for te 2025 Jubile Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. Pope Francis said that a Year of Prayer starting on January 21 would be “a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer in one’s personal life, in the life of the Church, and in the world… I ask you to intensify your prayer to prepare us to live this event of grace well and to experience the power of God’s hope.”
Family prayer is emphasised throughout the Year of Prayer. One of the main places where families gather is sharing at least one meal a day. This time could be a short but meaningful opportunity to pray together as a family, thanking the Lord for what we have received and praying for those most in need. Children can then learn that the daily bread, which we ask for with the Lord’s Prayer, is not just an abstract concept, but a very concrete request that we make as children to our Heavenly Father. The meal that we eat together is a blessing received from the Lord, which accompanies us throughout our lives.
There is also a particular focus on the Our Father, and this presents us with a great opportunity to go back to the basics of prayer. Perhaps daily praying of the Our Father with our families could be done.
Our Father,
Who art in Heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Sacrament of Reconciliation — 2024
We continue to pray for all those children who are preparing to make the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As they learn more about this important sacrament, we pray…
Loving God,
Pour out Your blessing upon our children,
That during this time of Sacramental preparation,
they may grow closer to you and come to know Your special love for them.
May this time of preparation be a time of blessing for all families
and for our parish community of St John’s,
and unite us all in your great love. Amen.

On Thursday, 4th April, St John’s will mark World Autism Awareness Day with a special Mufti Day event, inviting students to wear the vibrant colours of the rainbow . The theme resonates deeply with the essence of this day, emphasising the importance of patience and kindness, and urging everyone not to rush to judgment. It's a powerful reminder to embrace understanding and empathy towards individuals on the autism spectrum, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment within our community. Let's celebrate diversity and spread acceptance on this significant occasion.
Year 6 students from St John’s recently travelled an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity of participating in a variety of educational programs, which focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
After a very early departure, the students enjoyed visiting many venues throughout Canberra which included the National Exhibition Centre, NEEC, Old Parliament House, Parliament House, Museum of Modern Democracy, and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia. Questacon and the National Arboretum Canberra were the definite favourite venues.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion and compliance paperwork.

Berry Street Education Model Professional Learning
On Tuesday 2nd April St John’s Catholic Parish Primary School staff were joined by St Therese Catholic Parish Primary School staff to begin our two year professional learning sequence with Berry Street Education Model. The Berry Street Education Model is a training course that enables educators to increase engagement with students in the classroom and successfully improve all students’ self-regulation, growth and academic achievement. The five domains of the Berry Street Education Model correspond with child-development capacities that each student must build in order to be ‘ready to learn’. When considering how to best meet the needs of students, the Berry Street Education Model prioritises building self-regulatory ability, relational capacity and the increasing the willingness to engage in learning. The 4 professional learning days over two years will cover 5 domains.
Body |
Building students’ capacity by increasing physical regulation of the stress response, de-escalation and focus. |
Relationship | Nurturing on-task learning through relational classroom management strategies. |
Engagement | Motivating students with strategies that increase their willingness to learn. |
Stamina | Creating a culture of academic persistence by nurturing resilience, emotional intelligence and a growth mindset. |
Character | Harnessing a values and character strengths approach to instil students’ self-knowledge for future pathways. |

Illawarra/Shoalhaven Information for parents if a child is discharged from hospital
If a student attends or is admitted to hospital for a health (including mental health) reason it is the parent/carer’s responsibility to ensure that necessary information on the care of their child is relayed to the school.
Health Services are unable to contact the school upon discharge for a variety of reasons, including confidentiality and workload, but in the Illawarra/Shoalhaven, Emergency Department Health staff are encouraged to provide parents with a flyer called the Emergency Department Postcard reminding them to contact their school. They also provide parents with a discharge form, which will include the outcome of the health visit, including referrals to community services for follow-up.
