Gospel Reflection

In Parishes throughout the Diocese of Wollongong we celebrate the 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time Year B. Today’s Gospel reports two stories of healing. One story tells us about a father’s great love for his dying daughter. The other story tells us about a desperate woman who risks much as she seeks healing from Jesus. In each story, the request for healing is itself a courageous act of faith, and yet very different circumstances are represented by the lives of each suffering person. Faith is the sounding theme of today’s Gospel reading. Faith is very basic to our lives: not only religious faith but faith in general.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the final newsletter edition for this term. This term has seen many experiences of community that make us uniquely who we are here at St John’s Catholic Parish Primary School. Over the past two weeks, we have focused on providing our students with opportunities to live their faith through action and outreach.
Faith in action is an opportunity for our students to develop attitudes and values founded on Catholic social teaching and act to promote social responsibility, human solidarity and the common good. Through a focus on Refugee Week, St Vincent De Paul and in Term 3 Naidoc Week initiatives at St John’s, we have and will continue to explore the principles of the Catholic Church’s teachings on issues of justice and responsibility in society through just action.
We congratulate Fr. Francis who celebrated the 29th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood on Monday 1st July. We give thanks to Fr. Francis for his spiritual leadership at St John's Catholic Parish School.
Semester One Student Reports and Additional Teacher and Parent/Carer Learning Conversations
Both the Semester One Student Reports and the additional Teacher and Parent/Carer Learning Conversations are an opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and growth students have made in the first Semester of the 2024 school year. I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers and Stage Leaders who have spent much of their time finalising the student reports that were shared with parents and carers last Friday. I am very proud of our students and the growth they have made in their learning, faith and well being during Semester One.
I would like to acknowledge and thank those parents and carers who have engaged in additional learning conversations as this has enabled teachers and parents and carers to provide each other feedback and collaborate so that our students can continue to experience growth in their faith, learning and well being. I would like to thank the St John's teachers for the care and support they show all students at St John’s and for their professionalism and dedication to ensure that our students faith, learning and well being growth and development is communicated clearly to parents and carers. Another great example of the collaboration between our staff and parents and carers that we value at St John’s.
The St John's School Choir
On Tuesday 25th June the St John's School Choir performed in the Wollongong Eisteddfod and Our sensational St John's School Choir gained 1st place.
The choir performed beautifully and the adjudicator's report outlined the high quality of skill and talent our students demonstrated throughout the two songs they performed at the Eisteddfod. This is testament to the wonderful talents that Ms Angela Boyd-Skinner and Mrs Catherine Sutton share with our students, their musical prowess and dedication.
Congratulations to our talented students, Ms Boyd-Skinner and Mrs Sutton who have spent many lunch times rehearsing and fine tuning their performance. We are very proud of you and your achievement!!
Whole School Community Events
Over the past two weeks there have been quite a number of extra curricula, whole school events that our students have participated in. Many students remember these events as a highlight of the school year. I would like to thank the staff who plan and facilitate these activities and events and I recognise that these activities take time out of their busy teaching schedule to plan and lead.
Thank you to Mrs Michelle Atkins and Mrs Lauren Mitchell who organised and led the school Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 2nd July. The day was a great success due to the support of parents and carers and staff and the support they provided Mrs Atkins and Mrs Mitchell throughout the carnival. I witnessed the way in which the staff and parents and carers all participated with such professionalism and dedication and I would like to recognise this commitment, well done everyone and thank you!!! Our students had a wonderful time, many smiles and laughs to be seen and heard.
Supporting Families in our St John's School Community
In every community, there are families facing hardships that can be overwhelming without support. A family in our school community requires our collective support, kindness and generosity. Last week you may have read in the Illawarra Mercury the story of the Broome family and Amarli who has a genetic disorder known as GRIK 2. The Broome family and supporters are organising for the 3rd and 4th August a fund-raiser which is a 34km trek. Featured in a separate page in this week's newsletter is detailed information about the fund-raiser. St John's staff and students will be holding our own fund-raiser in Term 3 inclusive of a mufti day, trek around our school for students and staff and a gold coin donation. More details will be shared in Term 3. Please keep the Broome family in your prayers and thoughts as we come together as a school community in support and care for the Broome family.

I would like to thank the students for their hard work and commitment to their learning this term. It has been a very busy term and our students certainly deserve a holiday. I would like to thank all parents and carers for your ongoing partnership as together we create a vibrant Catholic school community. I would like to thank the St John's Parents and Friends Association for their great work and the support they have provided throughout the term.
I wish you all a very relaxing pupil vacation period and hope you have an opportunity to spend time with your family and friends and look forward to seeing you all in Term 3. Please see the messages below of our St John's School Captains Raine and Henry.
SVDP Winter Appeal — Mufti Day and Fundraiser: Friday 21st June
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the families who supported the St Vincent de Paul Annual Winter Appeal. The contributions made during our Mufti Day fundraiser were truly remarkable, with monetary donations totaling an impressive $957. Additionally, the volume of tinned food and soups brought in was astounding. We have received a phone call expressing sincere thanks for our efforts in supporting SVDP and the important work they do. The generosity and compassion of our St John’s families continue to shine through, making a significant impact on those in need. Thank you for your ongoing support and kindness.

Congratulations Fr Francis!

Year 4 Religious Literacy Assessment
The Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA) in the Diocese of Wollongong began as a Partners in Learning initiative between the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong and the Australian Catholic University (ACU) in 2000. Whilst a formal partnership with ACU no longer exists we continue to consult with academics in the data analysis and assessment field from ACU.
This assessment provides a sustained and systemic Diocesan approach to the documentation and reporting of students’ learning in the key learning area of Religious Education (RE) across the diocese and in particular, aspects of religious literacy. It is a means of celebrating and sharing the good news about students' learning in Religious Education.
The concept of 'religious literacy' is the basis for the framework for assessment in Religious Education in Wollongong across K-6. To be religiously literate, children leaving a Catholic primary school need to be able to communicate with and be at home in Catholic society and religion in general. The assessment of religious literacy focuses on students’ knowledge and understanding of the key concepts that are being addressed by the Religious Education program and the children’s ability to communicate with their religious tradition.
The system-based Religious Literacy Assessment is placed in Year 4 towards the end of Stage 2 of schooling. The intention of the Religious Literacy Assessment is to influence learning and accountability and drive a culture of reflection on learning and pedagogy in the domain of RE.
The Year 4 Religious Literacy Assessment:
- is online using a Google Form
- includes 40 multiple choice questions which reflect Early Stage 1, Stage 1 and Stage 2 outcomes and content in Religious Education.
Key Year 4 RLA dates for 2024
- Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA) Trial - Tuesday 23 July 2024
- RLA Monday - Monday 5 August 2024
- Backup date for RLA - Tuesday 6 August 2024 (conducted for those absent on 5 August)
2024 — THE YEAR OF PRAYER
In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
The Jubilee Prayer
Father in heaven,
May the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators
of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever.
Amen

School Choir — BlueScope WIN Wollongong Eisteddfod: FIRST PLACE
The Wollongong Eisteddfod
Our St John’s Choir students were absolutely delighted to perform in the Wollongong Eisteddfod on Tuesday evening last week.
The children have spent many lunchtimes over the past two terms preparing both their vocal technique and their performance skills. The students showed so much commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication as they worked through this process.
On the evening we were thrilled to be joined by so many of our wonderful families who came to support their children and grandchildren. Their performance was magnificent & every bit of their hard work paid off in their first place prize.
We were most grateful to be supported by Mrs Michelle Atkins, Miss Olivia Boyd- Skinner & of course our school principal Mrs Michelle Rodwell.
We very much look forward to our next opportunity to perform in our local community.
Mrs Catherine Sutton & Ms Angela Boyd-Skinner

Kindergarten Reading Parent and Carer Workshop
Last Wednesday, 26th June, Kindergarten parents joined us for an information session about current research-based best practices in reading instruction. We learnt about systematic, synthetic phonics and the role it plays in reading and writing. New terminology was introduced and practical demonstrations of blending to read and segmenting to spell were provided. Parents learnt how important it is to articulate the phonemes (speech sounds) correctly and how this can impact on spelling. Finally, tips were shared on how to help with reading at home.
Feedback from our parent participants was that other parents may benefit from the information presented but that work commitments made attendance problematic. We will work on finding another way to share the information, in a more convenient way, next term.
To those who were able to attend, thank you for your participation and feedback.
Mrs Chris Garrett
Each year NESA conducts a writing competition called WRITE ON. It is open to all school students in NSW schools. We had 13 students in Stage 3 make a submission to be considered for nomination from St John’s as only one entry from Stage 3 could be submitted.

Our Year Four students had a magical experience attending Holy Spirit High School's production of "Frozen Jnr.". The performance was a spectacular display of talent and creativity, leaving our young audience members in awe. From the stunning costumes to the impressive acting and singing, the students were captivated from start to finish. This outing was not only entertaining but also inspiring, as it showcased the hard work and dedication of older students in our community. A big thank you to Holy Spirit High School for an unforgettable theatrical experience!

The theme for the 2024 Children's Book Week is "Reading is Magic." We’re celebrating the incredible ability of stories to transport our minds to new places. We're encouraging students to be curious about the wonders of our world. The magic of reading also lies in its power to captivate; a good story sparks conversations and connects readers with one another.
It's time to start planning your Book Week costume for the Parade! Remember, there's no need to spend a lot on your outfit. We encourage you to get creative with items you already have at home and take inspiration from your favourite characters. Our Book Week Parade will be on 27 August from 8:45 am to 9:30 am. Parents, carers, and grandparents are welcome to join the celebration!
In 2024 Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students are invited to participate in competitions organised by the Educational Assessment Centre at the University of NSW. These are external assessment opportunities that are facilitated by the school. Participation is completely optional.

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports

Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participated in the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) during Term 1. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided for your child early in Term 3. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
If your child participated in 2024 and does not receive a report by Friday 2 August, contact the school office.

School Drop Off & Pick Up Zones
Important
Car lines in both Jerematta and Werowi Street offer a convenient and safe drop-off and pick-up for families. For the efficient operation of this arrangement, there is a need for all parents/carers to adhere to road rules and our school practices, which have been developed with safety at the forefront of our planning. It is important that families accessing the convenience of car lines do so responsibly and in a safe manner.
Therefore, parents and carers are requested to;
- Drivers are to remain in their cars while children exit/enter from the curbside.
- Display your family nameplate upon approach for afternoon pickup.
- Follow the directions of staff at all times.
- Always move to the furthestmost point in the designated drop-off and pick-up zone.
- Not queue, blocking traffic flow in surrounding streets and roundabouts.
If you prefer to accompany your child to the school gate, please park in the designated car parking areas and not the drop-off zone.
Regular police patrols ensure the safety of all in and around school zones. If you operate contrary to the signage, you risk a substantial fine.
To request a family nameplate, parents and carers are invited to complete the online form, by accessing the following link https://goo.gl/forms/L1KuKhqKB9Kj49wq1
