Gospel Reflection

In Parishes throughout the Diocese of Wollongong we celebrated the 17th Sunday of Ordinary Time Year B. Last Sunday's Gospel uses the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes to teach about the Eucharist. John’s Gospel notes the detail that the bread blessed and shared with the crowd are barley loaves. This is the food of the poor. It reminds us that God feeds and nourishes us, fulfilling our physical needs as well as our spiritual ones. In the Eucharist, we are sent to serve others and are transformed by the Eucharist.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 3 and I hope you all had a chance to spend quality time with your family and friends. Having spoken with quite a few parents and carers, grandparents and students over the past week, it sounds like it was a balanced opportunity for rest, a bit of catchup for some, time with family and friends.
NAIDOC Week
Last week we celebrated Naidoc Week, which took place nationally during the student vacation period. St John’s not only celebrated this very important and significant national event with various engagement opportunities and activities, but also with a wonderful celebration of the richness and diversity of Aboriginal culture and first nations people's last Wednesday at our whole school liturgy. Naidoc week provides an opportunity for our community to come together to recognise and celebrate the rich traditions and culture that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples past, present and those of the future contribute to our communities.
The theme for Naidoc Week- Keep the Fire Burning- Blak, Loud and Proud honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's Naidoc Week theme celebrates the unyielding spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The statement from the National Naidoc Week Committee explains that as we keep the fire burning, we kindle the sparks of pride and unity, igniting a renewed commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation. Through our collective efforts, we can forge a future where the stories, traditions, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are cherished and celebrated, enriching the fabric of the nation with the oldest living culture in the world.
I would like to acknowledge and thank Miss Idstein, Aunty Jo, Uncle Mark and our students for preparing and leading the Liturgy of the Word to celebrate and recognise Naidoc Week.
Grandparent's Day
Last Friday we welcomed and celebrated with grandparents and parents and carers, Grandparents Day. This was an opportunity to express our gratitude to the grandparents of St John’s for the many things they do for our community, the care, love and support they show our students. This day was in recognition of The Feast of Joachim and Anne which is celebrated on July 26 each year.
During our Grandparent’s Day Liturgy of the Word and Blessing we recognised the importance of honouring our grandparents and thanking them for the blessings they have passed down to us in love.
World day for Grandparents and the Elderly was inaugurated by Pope Francis in 2021 and is celebrated on the forth Sunday of July. Pope Francis in his message this year states that Grandparents Day invites us to reflect on the bond that unites young and old. The Lord trusts that young people, through their relationships with their grandparents , will realize that they are called to cultivate memory and recognise the beauty of being part of a much larger history. Friendship with a grandparent can help the young to see life not only in terms of the present and realize that not everything depends on them and their abilities. For grandparents, the presence of a young person in their lives can give them hope that their experience will not be lost and that their dreams can find fulfilment.
As grandparents to Jesus St Anne and St Joachim taught the art of meeting and walking together and at St John’s we recongise that our grandparents are an integral part of our St John’s community and I would like to express my gratitude to all our grandparents for the love and support you express daily to our students and the support you provide our school community.
Thank you to those grandparents who joined our community to celebrate this occasion and to Mr Jeff De Battista, Ms Kylie Stephens and the staff at St John’s for their organisation and support on the day. A wonderful community celebration!!
We have recently received our 2024 Naplan results and I would like to congratulate our Year 3 and Year 5 students on their achievements. Parent and carer reports were distributed last week. We are still waiting to receive the state and national mean scores so that comparative data can be shared with parents and carers via the newsletter in the coming weeks. We will continue to unpack the Naplan data to inform teaching and learning actions for the remainder of the school year and we will use the data to inform our ongoing school improvement goals. Congratulations Year 3 and Year 5 students.
I thank you all for your ongoing support.
Yours in Faith and Learning,
Mrs Michelle Rodwell
Principal

Year 4 Religious Literacy Assessment - Monday 5 August 2024
Back up date - Tuesday 6 August 2024 (conducted for those absent on 5 August)
The Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA) in the Diocese of Wollongong began as a Partners in Learning initiative between the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong and the Australian Catholic University (ACU) in 2000. Whilst a formal partnership with ACU no longer exists we continue to consult with academics in the data analysis and assessment field from ACU.
This assessment provides a sustained and systemic Diocesan approach to the documentation and reporting of students’ learning in the key learning area of Religious Education (RE) across the diocese and in particular, aspects of religious literacy. It is a means of celebrating and sharing the good news about students' learning in Religious Education.
The concept of 'religious literacy' is the basis for the framework for assessment in Religious Education in Wollongong across K-6. To be religiously literate, children leaving a Catholic primary school need to be able to communicate with and be at home in Catholic society and religion in general. The assessment of religious literacy focuses on students’ knowledge and understanding of the key concepts that are being addressed by the Religious Education program and the children’s ability to communicate with their religious tradition.
The system-based Religious Literacy Assessment is placed in Year 4 towards the end of Stage 2 of schooling. The intention of the Religious Literacy Assessment is to influence learning and accountability and drive a culture of reflection on learning and pedagogy in the domain of RE.
The Year 4 Religious Literacy Assessment:
- is online using a Google Form
- includes 40 multiple choice questions which reflect Early Stage 1, Stage 1 and Stage 2 outcomes and content in Religious Education.
Last week students in Year 4 were able to sit a practise test of the Religious Literacy Assessment to enable them to feel comfortable and confident with the process.
Tuesday 6 August 2024 — The Feast of the Transfiguration
The Feast of the Transfiguration reminds us of the moment when Jesus revealed His divine glory to Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor. This significant event in our faith highlights the transformative power of God's love and the promise of eternal life. In our school community, we strive to reflect this divine light through our actions, words and shared commitment to living out the Gospel values. Let us take this opportunity to deepen our faith and inspire our children to see the world through the lens of Christ's transfigured glory, fostering a spirit of hope and renewal in all that we do.
Tuesday 6 August 2024 — Year 6 Diocesan Mass with Bishop Brian
On Tuesday 6th August, Year 6 students from 8 of our Diocesan Primary Schools will celebrate Mass with our Year students. Bishop Brian will preside over the Mass, along with Father Francis and some of the parish priests from the visiting schools. Year 6 Mass with Bishop Brian is an annual event in which students gather as a community of faith, engage with our Bishop and reflect on their time at primary school and the exciting opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. After Mass, all of the Year 6 students have the opportunity to have lunch together and mix with students from other schools - including meeting and talking to those who may be attending high school next year with them.
Year 6 students will wear full school uniform on this day.
Thursday 8 August 2024 — The Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop
On the Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia's first canonised saint, we reflect on her incredible legacy of faith, education and compassion. Mary MacKillop, also known as Saint Mary of the Cross, devoted her life to serving the poor and providing quality education to children across Australia. As a Josephite school, we are especially proud to honour her, as she co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, who continue to influence our values and mission. We are blessed to have Sr. Narelle, a dedicated Josephite nun, working in our school, enriching our community with her wisdom and kindness. Her unwavering commitment to justice and her belief in the value of every individual continue to inspire us today. In our school community, we strive to emulate these values by fostering a spirit of kindness, inclusion and dedication to learning. Let us, through our prayer and gratitude for the life and work of this remarkable woman, ask for her intercession and guidance in our daily lives.
2024 — THE YEAR OF PRAYER — in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
The Jubilee Prayer
Father in heaven,
May the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators
of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever.
Amen
Prayer Intentions
We pray for all families in our school community who are in need of our prayers.
We pray for the needs of our country and our world.

On Tuesday 30 July we celebrated NAIDOC Week with a whole school Liturgy and red, black and yellow mufti day.
This year’s theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud.
The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Our celebration began with a smoking ceremony, followed by a beautiful liturgy which was attended by families, elders, local community members, representatives from the Catholic Education Office and Uncle Kevin Butler who most recently received an ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Community’ award at the 2024 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards.
Following the Liturgy our students, families and guests were invited to share lunch together.
Thank you to Uncle Mark Mongta and Aunty Jo Ball for all they do in supporting Indigenous Education at St John’s.
Thank you to the St John’s School Community for their participation in what is such a special event in our country.

IMPORTANT
We have just been made aware that there will be a clearway for Werowi Street for both sides of the street which will have an impact on parking, drop off and pick up on Werowi Street. We are in the process of finalising details with Wollongong City Council and a Compass Alert will be sent out by the end of the week confirming arrangements. Please note there will be considerable disruption to traffic flow during this time.
This week a number of Year 5 and 6 students presented the work they have been researching as part of their Genius Hour Project. The purpose of this project over 10 weeks was to answer three important questions.
1. How does the topic interest me?
2. What skills do I want to improve?
3. Will my research help others?
There was a wide variety of topics chosen including surfing, AUSLAN, blood types, Japanese robotics, WWE, Virtual Reality, Greek mythology, Olympics, the Mariana Trench, why we should change the Australian flag, and the benefits of playing the piano.
The students presented to their classmates and teachers. The feedback from students and teachers was positive. Students demonstrated great depth and passion about their individual topics and we certainly learnt so much from them all. Congratulations to Isla, Ruby, Bronte, Caydence, Ella, Ethan, Isabella, Lucien, Marco, Menara, Nina, Preston, Will and Zac. We are very proud of the students.

On Monday, July 22, the staff at St John’s participated in a Staff Development day focusing on Assessment-Informed Instruction in Mathematics. The day was directly linked to St John’s Annual Improvement goal, ‘All students are appropriately challenged and demonstrate growth in Mathematics.’
Teachers worked collaboratively to:
- Reflect on how students are appropriately challenged and can demonstrate growth in their Mathematics classroom
- Review the ‘Big Ideas’ in Mathematics that help students to make connections in their learning
- Analyse assessment data to inform instruction
- Use assessment data to plan for targeted teaching opportunities in Mathematics
The day was facilitated by Alexandra Hingston from the Catholic Education Office. Throughout Semester Two, teachers will continue to engage in professional learning in order to effectively plan for teaching and learning experiences that allow for all students to be appropriately challenged and demonstrate growth in Mathematics.

School Bus Travel — Opal Cards (Expired Cards)

Privacy Policy — Standard Collection Notice
Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong’s (CEDoW) Standard Collection Notice for parents and students has been updated. This notice explains how CEDoW handles the personal information of students and parents, and replaces the notice previously provided to you in our enrolment package.
The St John's Parents and Friends (P&F) have been reviewing an addition to the girls' summer uniform. Yes! We are looking at the introduction of shorts for girls. The P&F have reviewed this in support of inclusion, comfort and interest in wanting to have an additional option for girls for the summer season.
After commencing consultation with the P&F community we have progressed manufacturing samples from Lowes. In addition we have also had feedback from parents in wanting to include the school logo on the boys summer shirt. Therefore we have included this in our review.
The girls' shirt and shorts are proposed to be additional items to the summer uniform and are therefore optional. The girls' dress will remain an option for students.
The boys shirt which includes the logo is proposed to be phased into the school uniform overtime. This means that if students already have school shirts (without logos) they can continue to wear them in 2025.
We are hopeful that we will be able to have the additional shirts and shorts manufactured for 2025. Lowes have advised that the pricing would include:
- Girls Shorts: $42.95
- Girls Shirts: $42.95
- Boys Shirts: $39.95
In addition to the above there is also consideration to including the school logo with the boys and girls winter shirt (pricing to be confirmed).
Our next P&F meeting will be on 6th August at 7:00pm. If you have any questions that you would like addressed at the P&F meeting please complete the Google form below.

Keeping kids safe around schools
Car Lines & School Zone Parking
Car lines in both Jerematta and Werowi Street offer a convenient and safe drop-off and pick-up for families. For the efficient operation of this arrangement, there is a need for all parents/carers to adhere to road rules and our school practices, which have been developed with safety at the forefront of our planning. It is important that families accessing the convenience of car lines do so responsibly and in a safe manner.
Therefore, parents and carers are requested to;
- Drivers are to remain in their cars while children exit/enter from the curbside.
- Display your family nameplate upon approach for afternoon pickup.
- Follow the directions of staff at all times.
- Always move to the furthestmost point in the designated drop-off and pick-up zone.
- Not queue, blocking traffic flow in surrounding streets and roundabouts.
If you prefer to accompany your child to the school gate, please park in the designated car parking areas and not the drop-off zone.
Regular police patrols ensure the safety of all in and around school zones. If you operate contrary to the signage, you risk a substantial fine.
To request a family nameplate, parents and carers are invited to complete the online form, by accessing the following link https://goo.gl/forms/L1KuKhqKB9Kj49wq1
NAPLAN Individual Student Reports

Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 participated in the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) during Term 1. A NAPLAN individual student report will be provided for your child early in Term 3. The same report format is used for every student in Australia.
NAPLAN results are reported against proficiency standards. There is a standard for each assessment area at each year level. Proficiency standards provide clear information on student achievement. Student achievement is shown against 4 levels of proficiency:
- Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
If your child participated in 2024 and does not receive a report by Friday 2 August, contact the school office.
