Gospel Reflection

In Parishes throughout the Diocese of Wollongong, we celebrated the 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time Year B. Last Sunday's Gospel reading encourages us to reflect on personal faith in the life of Christian discipleship. Throughout our life we make our own judgements about who Jesus is and in doing so determine the way of life that we will follow. God’s grace invites us to be Jesus’ disciples, and we respond to the grace of God to live in right relationship with others.
Dear Parents and Carers,

Last Sunday, 25 August, we celebrated Social Justice Sunday. In a tradition reaching back to 1940, each year the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference releases a major social justice statement in time for Social Justice Sunday (last Sunday in August). Through this tradition they contribute to the development of local Catholic Social Teaching. The statements encourage the Catholic community to reflect and act on social, economic and ecological issues. They remind us of the social dimension of the mission of the Church. The theme of the 2024 Statement is “Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World.” The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference reminds us that peace is the work of everyone, and we can all do something to be peace-makers. Indeed it is a duty imposed on us by the Gospel. Peace is to be made on both the macro and the micro level. We need to act small but think big, to act locally but think globally. Please see the link below to access the Social Justice Statement.
Walk for Amarli Fund-Raiser
It was an honour and privilege to watch our school community come together to support a family in need. On Wednesday, 21st August, students and staff participated in our own Trek for Amarli, which was an opportunity to provide support to the Broome family. It was evident that our St John's school community cares for those in need and our school motto, 'Love One Another' was alive during our walk. On behalf of the Broome family I thank our school community for your support, prayers, thoughts and care.
Book Week
Students and staff were very excited to celebrate Book Week on Tuesday, 27 August. Students and staff were involved in a number of fabulous learning experiences including a Book Week Parade, a Book Week Author visit, planned Book Week literacy activities and a book week play performed by the staff. I would like to thank Ms Peta Idstein, Mrs Tracey Scapin and Mrs Maree Kissell for their excellent planning and organisation of the day. We had a wonderful day seeing our students and staff dressed up in amazing costumes and celebrating with Year 6 students as they experience their last book week celebration at St John's.
Dr Justin Coulson Workshop with students in Years 4 to 6
Today, we had the privilege to listen to Dr Justin Coulson present an engaging workshop for our students in Years 4 to 6 on five ways to wellbeing. The workshop focused on the importance of wellbeing and linked so well to our upcoming wellbeing afternoons held in Week 7. We look forward to hearing Dr Justin Coulson this evening as he speaks with parents and carers about the importance of resilience.
Father's Day
On Friday, 30 August, the St John’s school community will be celebrating Father and Grandfather’s Day with a steak sandwich, a guest speaker from the fathering project, handball games on the playground and open classrooms. This will be another wonderful event where the community of St John’s recognises the importance of positive male role models in the life of our students and to express our gratitude for Fathers or those men who are significant in the lives of our students. I wish all of the Fathers and Grandfathers and the special men in the lives of the students of St John's a very happy Father’s Day. We hope that you can really enjoy your day with your family and your children on Sunday, 1 September, as we celebrate you and the very important role you play. Thank you for all that you bring to the life of our school community.
I will be taking Long Service Leave from Monday 2nd September until Friday 13th September. Mr Jeff De Battista will be Principal and Ms Kylie Stephens Assistant Principal whilst I am on leave. I thank both Jeff and Kylie and the school leadership team for their support whilst I am on leave.
Yours in Faith and Learning,
CHANGE OF DATES/CHANGE OF TIMES - PLEASE NOTE
World Day of Prayer for Creation Liturgy - Monday 2nd September - Our liturgy was originally planned to begin at 12:00 but due to Wellbeing activities, we will now begin our liturgy in the Church at 11am. Sunday 1st September - Father’s Day
On Sunday we celebrate Father’s Day, a special time to honour and thank all the wonderful fathers, grandfathers and other father figures in our lives. Fathers show us God’s love by their kindness, care and guidance. Let us take this opportunity to express our gratitude to our dads for their hard work and love. We pray that God blesses all fathers with strength, wisdom, and joy as they lead their families with faith. May St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, inspire them to be loving and caring always. Happy Father’s Day to all our dads!
Sunday 1st September - World Day of Prayer for Creation
On September 1st, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, a special day for Catholics worldwide to come together in prayer, reflection, and action for our common home. This day marks the beginning of the Season of Creation, which lasts until October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology. As a Catholic community, we are called to renew our commitment to caring for God’s creation, recognizing the beauty and fragility of the earth and our responsibility to protect it. Let us take this opportunity to pray for the environment, reflect on our impact on the planet, and take meaningful steps toward sustainable living in our daily lives.
Sunday 8th September - Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On Sunday 8th September, we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, remembering the birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary’s life shows us the importance of saying "yes" to God and trusting in His plans for us. Just as Mary was chosen to bring Jesus into the world, we are also chosen to share God's love with others. Let us take this special day to thank God for Mary and ask for her guidance and help in our daily lives.
Dear God,
Thank you for the gift of Mary, our Mother.
Help us to follow her example of faith, love, and obedience to Your will.
May she guide us closer to You each day.
Amen.
2024 - THE YEAR OF PRAYER - in preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
The Jubilee Prayer
Father in heaven,
May the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators
of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed, be glory and praise for ever.
Amen
Prayer Intentions
We pray for all families in our school community who are in need of our prayers.
We pray for the needs of our country and our world.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us.
St John the Evangelist, pray for us.

Congratulations to all the students who competed in the soccer gala day! Your hard work, team spirit, and dedication were truly inspiring. Whether you won or not, the effort you put into every game is something to be proud of. Well done for representing your teams with such energy and enthusiasm! See some recounts from two students who attended the day.
Last Friday, the soccer gala day took place at Albion Park. Lots of other schools were also invited to attend, including Saint Paul’s, Stella Maris and many more. It started at 8:30am and ended at 2:30pm. When we got there, we got split into teams and headed to our first field. We had lots of fun playing soccer and giving it a go. A big thank you to all of the teachers that helped to make this day happen.

Last Friday many students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 participated in the annual Diocesan Soccer Gala Day. There were 6 rounds. We versed other schools from the diocese such as St Paul’s at Albion Park, Stella Maris at Shellharbour and Saints Peter and Paul at Kiama. We played at Albion Park. It started at 8:30 am and ended at 2:30 pm. I believe our school did a great job participating in the day! I am sure everyone had lots of fun and enjoyed some sun.

Student Wellbeing Afternoons — Next Week
During next week, we will be having our Term 3 Student Wellbeing Afternoons on the following days:
• Monday 2 September – Year 5 & Year 6
• Tuesday 3 September – Kindergarten, Year 1 & Year 2
• Wednesday 4 September – Year 3 & Year 4
Please note that due to this schedule, Kindergarten and Year 4 will change their sports uniform day for this week only. Year 4 will wear their sports uniform on Tuesday 3 September and Kindergarten will wear sports uniform on Wednesday 4 September.
As with previous Student Wellbeing Afternoons, students will be able to choose and participate in fun and engaging activities that promote their wellbeing. As part of these Wellbeing Afternoons, the students will be provided with a sausage sizzle for lunch. All sausages will be gluten free and gluten free bread will be provided for students with a gluten intolerance. If your child does not eat sausage sizzles or requires more food for lunch than this, please ensure that you pack extra food in their lunch box.
To help make these afternoons even more enjoyable, students are once again encouraged to wear mufti clothes to school on the day their grade has their wellbeing afternoon.
On behalf of the school community, we would like to thank the Parents and Friends Association for their support of this initiative by again funding the cost of the sausage sizzle for the students.
We look forward to fun and enjoyable afternoons, promoting and supporting student wellbeing across the school.
Kindergarten Excursion — Symbio
As part of Kindergarten's Science and Technology unit focusing on the living world we visited Symbio Wildlife Park. It was their very first school excursion and everyone was very excited, especially as we got to take the bus! When we arrived, we were lucky (and brave) enough to get up close with some of the reptiles, including Bluey, the blue-tongue lizard, and Chomp, the baby crocodile. After that, we split off into groups to feed the farmyard animals and the kangaroos. The goats and the kangaroos tickled our hands when they licked off the food and some even tried to snatch our bags of feed! Throughout the day, we roamed and listened to the rangers tell us all about the resident animals and some of the things they needed to live, like shelter, water and food. We talked about the different habitats of the animals, their diets and how some animals camouflage with their natural environments. The reptile cave was amazing and we saw all sorts of interesting, dangerous and slithery snakes, while the penguins gave us quite a show diving and zooming through the water. On the bus ride back to school, some of us had a much-needed nap while others shared their favourite parts of the day.

Year 1 Excursion — Stanwell Tops
On Friday the 16th, Year 1 embarked on an exciting adventure to Stanwell Tops, diving into the rich traditions of Aboriginal culture with Uncle Richard, Scott, and Jessie. The day kicked off with a captivating smoking ceremony followed by the kids being painted with ochre, a special experience that set the tone for the day. From there, the students got hands-on with spear throwing and even learned the skill of making a boomerang return! They also explored fascinating Aboriginal artifacts, like possum skins, dilly bags, and large hunting tools used for tracking kangaroos and emus.

Year 2 Excursion — Sydney Aquarium
Our Year 2 students had an absolutely fantastic time during their recent excursion to Sealife Sydney Aquarium and Wildlife Sydney Zoo. Half the group started with a mesmerizing journey through the underwater world at Sealife Sydney Aquarium, where the children were wide-eyed with wonder as they gazed at the enormous shark tanks, vibrant coral reefs, and playful penguins. They learned fascinating facts about marine life and marvelled at the beauty of sea creatures they had only seen in books before.
After a short lunch, the adventure continued at Wildlife Sydney Zoo. The students had the incredible opportunity to see Australian wildlife up close, including koalas, kangaroos and a variety of exotic animals. This allowed the children to deepen their understanding of animal behaviour and conservation. The day was filled with laughter, learning and unforgettable moments, leaving our Year 2s with cherished memories and a greater appreciation for the natural world.
A big thank you to all the beautifully behaved students who made this memorable excursion possible!

On Tuesday we gathered as a school community to celebrate Book Week. It was a wonderful day where the theme ‘Reading is Magic’ came to life with amazing costumes and through our guest author Lisa Nicol. Our now world famous Teacher Play was another success. Thank you to all the students, families and staff for their participation in such a fun day.

Book Week — Dapto Library Visits, K–2
Last week Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 visited Dapto Library to celebrate Book Week.
The librarians shared some great stories with us in a fun and interactive way.
It was great to visit our local library and the students were all encouraged to visit with their families and borrow books. We are so grateful to all the librarians for organising such exciting and engaging visits.

On Friday the 23th of August the Edmund Rice School Band came to perform a few great songs for us. They performed: The Chicken Dance, Dance Monkey, Nutbush City, Never Going To Give You Up, We Will Rock You and a few more songs. We had a great time and even got to get up and dance and sing. We are very grateful that we got to listen to some of the songs the band had to play. Everyone had an amazing time and can’t wait for them to come back next year. Thank you Edmund Rice!!

On Friday the 23rd of August the Edmund Rice School Band came to perform some great songs for us like Dance Monkey, Baby Shark, The Chicken Dance Song, Nutbush City, Never Gonna Give You Up, Billie Jean, We Will Rock You and many more. All students from Kinder to Year came (except for those at the soccer gala day) and had an amazing time, dancing, singing and also guessing songs. With warmer weather approaching, students may begin wearing the summer uniform and parents and carers have a choice if they would like their child to wear their summer or winter uniform dependent upon the weather. The official date for the children to switch to their summer uniform is Tuesday, 15 October Week 1 Term 4.
The St John's Parents and Friends (P&F) are excited to announce that we are moving forward with the introduction of shorts as an option for the girls' summer uniform. This decision is in support of inclusion, comfort, and the interest expressed by our community in providing an additional choice for girls during the summer season.
Following consultation with the P&F community, we have begun the production of samples through Lowes. Additionally, based on feedback from parents, we have decided to incorporate the school logo on the boys' summer shirts. This change has now been included in our plans.
The proposed girls' shirt and shorts will be optional additions to the summer uniform, with the existing girls' dress remaining available as an option for students.
The boys' shirt with the logo will be gradually introduced into the school uniform. Students who already have school shirts without logos may continue to wear them throughout 2025.
We are hopeful that we will be able to have the additional shirts and shorts manufactured for 2025. Lowes have advised that the pricing would include:
- Girls Shorts: $42.95
- Girls Shirts: $42.95
- Boys Shirts: $39.95
In addition to the above there is also consideration to including the school logo with the boys and girls winter shirt (pricing to be confirmed).

We're wearing our footy colours for kids with cancer! — for a donation.
Each year, over 950 children in Australia are diagnosed with cancer, causing them to miss more than six months of school and social connections during treatment. We're participating in Fight Cancer Foundation's Footy Colours Day to support these kids. Funds raised will help provide accommodation and support for cancer patients and their families, as well as fund life-saving research. The Foundation’s accommodation centres give families a "home away from home" during challenging times, easing the financial and emotional burden. Please donate to help make a difference in the lives of kids with cancer!
