Gospel Reflection

Dear Parents and Carers,
On behalf of Fr. Francis and the staff at St John's, I wish you a warm welcome back to the 2025 school year. I hope that your Christmas was faith-filled and you were able to spend time with your loved ones during the pupil vacation. I have spoken with many parents, carers and students about their break and the wonderful time they had during January.
It was such a pleasure to see our students enter the school with such happy smiles and greeting their teachers and friends with much enthusiasm. This is certainly a testament of the supportive and caring culture at St John’s, a school where sincere care is shown constantly by students, staff, parents and carers.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the 10 new students who have joined our school community in 2025, especially those parents who will commence the journey with their child at St John’s for the very first time. Welcome to St John’s!! We also welcome our new staff members; Mrs Francis Beringer, Ms Alana Stroligo, Mrs Melissa McEntee, Mrs Belinda Evans, Ms Lara Conti and Mr Timothy Messner I am sure our new staff, students and families will experience the beauty of the St John’s hospitality.
Over the next few weeks our teachers will be focusing on classroom procedures and structures that support learning. This is an opportunity for students to engage in establishing routines for learning, which will optimise student engagement. This includes organising the learning space, establishing classroom procedures and introducing routines and structures that guide student behaviour and learning engagement.
Please see a video of our 2025 Student Leaders welcoming the St John's school community to the 2025 school year.
Jubilee Year
2025 is the Jubilee Year of Hope for the Catholic Church. It serves as an important opportunity for us to reflect on the role of schools as beacons of hope. St Thomas Aquinas describes hope as being born from the desire for something good that is “difficult but possible to attain.” Hope transcends our personal perspective and aspirations. Hope requires companions, people who want our good and who help us along our way. There is no clearer expression of this understanding of hope than in a Catholic school.
As a Catholic school community, we are called to invite students to find purpose and make sense of their world. In the words of the now Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe OP, teaching is "a beautiful expression of our hope for the young. Teaching recognises the dignity of the young as truth-seekers [and] embodies our hope for their future." Our Catholic school St John’s is a place of hope.
This year, in the spirit of the Jubilee, we will be encouraged to fan the flame of hope that has been given to us to help our community "gain strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision" (Pope Francis: 2024). I look forward to celebrating the Jubilee Year of Hope with our school community.
Kindergarten 2025
It has been a pleasure to welcome our Kindergarten students to St John’s. The kindergarten students bring such joy to the school community with their wonder and awe and inquisitive minds. A warm welcome to our new kindergarten parents and carers. While our new families may feel a little overwhelmed with all that comes with new beginnings, know that we are here to support you. I’m confident that you will feel welcomed and that your experience will be positive and supportive. If at any time, you require clarification on any school-related matter, please don’t hesitate and contact the school office. It is great to welcome you to our school community.

School and Parent and Carer Collaboration
A continued priority for St John’s is parent and carer engagement in their child’s learning, wellbeing, spiritual growth and academic attainment. Outlined below are a number of processes that the school community have put in place this term to engage parents and carers in their child’s learning, wellbeing, spiritual growth and academic attainment. These processes include:
Parent and Carer Input Forms: Parent and carer input forms were distributed to parents and carers via Compass on Friday 31st January. We recently encountered a Google issue with the Parent/Carer Input Forms, which has affected submitted responses. As a result, we kindly request that parents and carers of Years 1 to 6 and Gunyah resubmit their data. These forms provide a valuable opportunity to share important information with the classroom teacher, including your child’s strengths and any other relevant details. Your input is incredibly important to us, and we sincerely appreciate your time and effort in completing the form again. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding, as this issue was beyond our control.
Grade Parent and Carer Information Videos: Videos will be were shared with parents and carers in Week 3 on Friday 14th February via Compass. The Grade Parent and Carer information videos outline the core content in each Key Learning Area that students will focus on throughout the school year.
Personalised Planning Meetings: Parents and Carers will be invited to meet with classroom teachers in Week 8 and 9 if your child has a personalised plan. This is an opportunity to discuss goals with your child's teacher and your child.
Individual Parent and Carer and Teacher Learning Conversations: Parents and Carers will be invited to meet with classroom teachers in Week 10 and 11 to discuss the learning in Term 1 and to set goals for Term 2 with your child's teacher and your child.
At St John’s we certainly value the relationship and partnership we have with our parents and carers. In this partnership, the responsibility for student’s learning, wellbeing and faith development is shared between parents and carers as the first and primary educator of their child, and the school community. Thank you to our parents and carers for this wonderful partnership.
2025 Annual School Improvement Plan
In 2024 staff, students, parents and carers had an opportunity to provide feedback about the strengths and areas of growth for the school. This feedback was used by staff and the School Leadership Team in consultation with the Catholic Education Office to develop the St John’s Annual Improvement plan for 2025. This year will see the staff at St John’s focus on one Annual Improvement Goal which is briefly outlined below.
All students will achieve relevant learning growth in Mathematics
Teachers' professional learning will be an integral component of the St John’s Annual Improvement Plan. Teachers will be released from their teaching load throughout the year to engage in professional learning targeted to the above annual improvement goals. We are looking forward to this year's targeted learning and partnership with our parents and carers.
On behalf of the staff at St John's we look forward to working with our parents and carers to provide a supportive and caring learning environment whereby every St John's student experiences continual growth in Faith and Learning. I leave you with a prayer intention from Pope Francis for educators and we acknowledge that our parents and carers are the first educators of our students.
"We pray that educators may be credible witnesses, teaching fraternity rather than competition and helping the youngest and most vulnerable above all." Pope Francis
I look forward to connecting with parents and carers at the upcoming St John’s school events this term.
Yours in Faith and Learning,
Michelle Rodwell
Principal
2025 Jubilee Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
As we step into 2025, we are blessed to celebrate the Jubilee Year, a sacred time of renewal, grace and joy in our Catholic faith. This Jubilee carries the theme "Pilgrims of Hope," reminding us that, as followers of Christ, we journey together with faith, trust and a spirit of hope. Pope Francis calls us to embrace this year as an opportunity to deepen our relationship with God, extend love and mercy to others and walk in solidarity as a community of faith. At St John’s Catholic Primary School, we look forward to embracing this special year with prayer, reflection and acts of service that embody our mission as pilgrims of hope. May this Jubilee be a time of spiritual growth and renewed commitment to living the Gospel with joy!
Jubilee Prayer
Heavenly Father,
As we journey through this Jubilee Year, guide us as pilgrims of hope.
Fill our hearts with faith, our minds with wisdom, and our hands with love for others.
Help us to walk in Your light, trusting in Your mercy and sharing Your joy.
May we grow in kindness, peace, and unity as we seek to follow Jesus each day.
Through the intercession of Mary, our Mother, and all the saints, may this Jubilee bring us closer to You.
Amen.
Friday 7th February 2025 - Commissioning of our Year 6 Student Leaders and our Stage 3 Mini Vinnies Team
This Friday, 7th February 2025, our new Student Leaders and Mini Vinnies Team will be officially commissioned and presented with their badges, during our first whole school Mass of the year. Mass will begin at 9:30am and families are very welcome to attend. Following the Mass, Student Leaders and the Mini Vinnies Team, along with their parents and carers, are invited to a special morning tea. Parents/carers of Student Leaders and Mini Vinnies Team members who have not completed the RSVP google form, could you please do so as soon as possible.
11 February 2025 - Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
On February 11, we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, a special day in honour of Mary’s appearance to St. Bernadette in Lourdes, France. This beautiful feast reminds us of Mary’s deep love for all people and her call to prayer, faith and healing. At St John’s Catholic Primary School, we look to Our Lady as a model of compassion and trust in God. Her message at Lourdes encourages us to turn to prayer, especially the Rosary, and to care for those who are sick or in need. As we mark this feast day, may we be inspired by Mary’s gentle presence and ask for her intercession, that we may grow in faith and kindness, bringing hope to those around us.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us!
13 February 2025 - Anniversary of our National Apology to the Stolen Generations
On February 13th we acknowledge the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, a significant moment in our nation's history. On this date in 2008, then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd delivered a formal apology on behalf of the Australian Government to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families. As a Josephite school, we are called to stand in solidarity with First Nations peoples, reflecting on the importance of truth, justice and reconciliation. Let us take this time to pray for healing, listen with open hearts, and commit to walking together towards a future of respect and understanding.
Prayer Intentions
We pray for all families in our school community who are in need of our prayers.
We pray for the needs of our country and our world.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us.
St John the Evangelist, pray for us.
Kylie Stephens
Religious Education Coordinator
A school-wide Mass is scheduled for 9:30 am on Friday, 7 February, during which the official induction of the 2025 student leaders and Mini Vinnies 2025 members will take place. RSVPs are requested by tomorrow for catering purposes.

2025 School Fee Information
School fees for 2025 have now been invoiced and statements will be issued by the end of Week One with annual or first instalment payment due on 28 February 2025. You may also view your school fee account in the Compass Parent Portal. Please note that if you have instalments set up, they will only be visible on your school fee statement and not in the Parent Portal.
Please note the following:
- The invoicing of school fees and the distribution of school fee statements each month, is a function carried out by the Catholic Education Office.
- Payment of fees, whether as an annual payment or payment by instalments is due on the date/s provided on your school fee statement.
- If an amendment is made to your school fee account e.g. your child changes subjects in a secondary school, etc. you will be emailed a statement which will provide a new schedule of payments and due dates. Please review this schedule to make any changes to your payments that are necessary.
Reminders for late payments
SMS and email reminders are automatically generated by our accounting software based on the number of days a payment is overdue and are distributed by the Catholic Education Office. For those families that may have difficulty in paying their school fees, these reminders may cause some distress. This is not our intention. Our intention is to support the collection of school fee accounts centrally and in so doing, alleviate some of the administrative work of our schools.
School fee account enquiries
Please note, the Catholic Education Office is now your main point of contact for queries relating to school fees. You can contact the Fee Team via email sflo@dow.catholic.edu.au or by telephone 02 4250 9649. You can still speak to the school office who will advise if you need to contact the Fee Team regarding your matter.
If you wish to pay by instalments
Many families have already elected to pay their school fees by instalments. If you wish to avail yourself of this option, please complete a Request to Pay by Instalment Form, which is available on St John's Dapto website or at the school office. On completion of the request either email it to instalments@dow.catholic.edu.au or submit at St John's Dapto school office. Following receipt of the request, instalments will be generated on your account and a schedule of payments and due dates will be provided on your next school fee statement. Please note it is only necessary to complete this form once during the period of child/children’s enrolment unless you wish to amend your payment frequency.
Difficulty with payment
If you are experiencing financial difficulty, we encourage you to contact the School Fees Team at CEO to discuss an arrangement that will assist you to meet your commitments. This may include the completion of a Diocesan Application for Fee Concession, you would need to contact the Fee Team to request a form. Be reassured that your situation will be treated with strict confidentiality and respect for your circumstances.
For further information regarding school fees, please access the Diocesan School Fee Management Policy and Frequently Asked Questions which is available on our website.
Classroom teachers are currently preparing parent information videos that outline specific information for the year ahead. These videos will be shared with parents on Friday 14 February.
At the end of Term 1 (dates to be announced), teachers from Year K to Year 6 will be hosting learning conversations. These conversations will involve discussions between classroom teachers, parents and students on achievements, areas for growth and the formation of learning goals. More information will be sent to parents in the coming weeks.
To communicate with your child’s teacher, parents/carers should:
- Email your child’s teacher directly. Teachers will reply within 2 working days, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm only
- Alternatively, phone (42614611) or email (info@sjddow.catholic.edu.au) the school office regarding changes to afternoon pick-up arrangements or to request a meeting.
The Seesaw app will be used by classroom teachers to share and celebrate learning with parents and carers. The conversation feature is no longer an option for sending private messages to classroom teachers. Kindergarten Seesaw login credentials will be emailed in the coming weeks. If you need to communicate with your child’s teacher, please email the teacher directly or contact the school office.
Class teacher emails are attached below.
Thank you for your understanding and support. I’m sure that you can appreciate the importance of having clear and consistent protocols for communicating with the school.
Thank you for your continued support of the school uniform policy. As a general reminder, it is expected that all students are in the correct school uniform daily. The policy explicitly outlines the school uniform required for both boys and girls enrolled at St John's. On the rare occasion, that your child cannot wear the correct uniform, a written explanation should be provided to their teacher.
The policy also includes expectations on the wearing of jewellery, nail polish, make-up and haircuts. All long hair MUST be tired back, regardless of gender. The emphasis is on neat and tidy hairstyles and extreme haircuts, as well as coloured hair, is not permitted.
School uniforms are expensive and the school is always ready to provide financial assistance to families in this regard, ensuring no family is disadvantaged. Please contact the school office on 4261 4611 for further assistance.
The P&F Annual General Meeting and Term One Meeting will be held in the St Joseph's Room on Tuesday, 11 February 2025, at 7 pm. The primary purpose of the P&F is to provide an opportunity for parents to be involved in the school through social events, fundraising and supporting various school initiatives throughout the year.
At the meeting, all positions will be declared vacant and an election will take place. If any parent wishes to nominate themselves or someone else for any of the positions, please complete the form below by Friday 7 February 2025. I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting.
Car lines in both Jerematta and Werowi Street offer a convenient and safe drop-off and pick-up for families. For the efficient operation of this arrangement, there is a need for all parents/carers to adhere to road rules and our school practices, which have been developed with safety at the forefront of our planning. It is important that families accessing the convenience of car lines do so responsibly and safe manner.
Therefore, parents and carers are requested to;
- Display your family name upon approach.
- Follow the directions of staff at all times.
- Always move to the furthest most point in the designated drop-off and pick-up zone.
- Not queue, blocking traffic flow in surrounding streets and roundabouts.
Regular police patrols ensure the safety of all in and around school zones, if you are operating contrary to the signage, you risk a substantial fine.
To request a family nameplate, parents and carers are invited to complete the online form, by accessing the following link https://goo.gl/forms/L1KuKhqKB9Kj49wq1
School students will be required to have a valid School Opal Card or travel pass for travel to and from school.
As the use of e-bikes and motorised scooters becomes increasingly popular among young people, it is essential that we work together to ensure the safety of students who use these forms of transportation.
While e-bikes and scooters provide a convenient way for children to travel, they also pose unique safety challenges, including risks associated with high speeds, interactions with traffic and pedestrians, inadequate protective gear, and a lack of awareness regarding road rules. To address these concerns, we encourage parents & carers to promote safe riding practices and educate students on the legal requirements surrounding e-bikes, motorised scooters, skateboards, and hoverboards.

Dear parents and carers,
We are seeking your help to support the students in our school with severe allergies.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. The most common causes of anaphylaxis in schools are allergies to food and insects (bees). To help manage allergies, our school is following the National Allergy Council’s Best Practice Guidelines for Anaphylaxis Prevention and Management in Schools.
The Best Practice Guidelines recommend an Allergy Aware approach, which means we are supporting students at risk of anaphylaxis in the following ways:
- training staff
- educating students about allergies and anaphylaxis
- teaching students that we all have different needs and to be respectful of others
- teaching students the importance of getting help immediately if their friend with allergy looks sick.
For food allergies, we are also:
- encouraging students with food allergies to wash their hands before and after eating
- encouraging students to wash their hands after eating something their classmate or friend is allergic to
- teaching students not to share food with friends who have food allergy.
Food allergies are common in school aged children and avoiding the food is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction. Therefore, we have put a range of different things in place to help keep these students safe.
Students with a food allergy may react to tactile (touch) exposure or inhalation exposure. Not every ingestion exposure will result in anaphylaxis, but the potential always exists. Whilst peanut allergy is the most likely cause, eight foods (peanut, tree nut, milk, egg, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish) account for the vast majority of total food allergies.
Therefore, we have chosen not to allow peanuts, peanut paste, peanut butter (including “dippers”), nuts, “Nutella” spread or nutty muesli bars within the school.
We ask you to support the school’s Allergy Aware approach so that we can increase safety and provide an environment that meets the needs of all our students.
Thank you for helping our school be “Allergy Aware”.

To the following students who will celebrate their birthday in February — we wish you a very happy birthday and hope you have a great day.

Parents, carers, and wider school communities can now access the latest individual school information on the My School website, which has been updated for 2024 with the latest school-level NAPLAN data and new profile information on schools.
The December 2024 My School update includes:
• 2024 NAPLAN results for schools
• 2024 school profile and population data
• 2024 school attendance data for Semester 1
• 2023 school financial information, including capital expenditure and funding sources
• 2023 vocational education training participation and outcomes
• 2023 year 12 certifications
Student progress data for 2021–2024 is not available due to the resetting of the NAPLAN measurement scale and earlier assessment of students, as data from 2024 onwards cannot be compared to pre-2024 data. However, school leaders, teachers, parents and carers can still view NAPLAN performance data relative to socio-educational advantage by school on the NAPLAN results page.
My School’s Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) indicates the average educational advantage of each school’s students. It is calculated using information about parents/carers’ occupations and education, school geographical location and the proportion of Indigenous students. A school’s ICSEA value is provided to encourage taking socio-educational advantage into account when comparing school achievement.
