Gospel Reflection
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the Week 4 school newsletter and the 4th week of learning at St John’s. As we enter more deeply into this Jubilee Year each Parish received materials from the Diocese of Wollongong that were distributed to parishioners over the weekend. In addition, all parishes in the Diocese have received “pilgrim passports” for parishioners who would like a passport to assist entering more deeply into the spirit of the Jubilee Year. The passports contain excellent information about the meaning of the Jubilee Year, associated themes of pilgrimage, the Jubilee Indulgence, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and list all six pilgrimage sites in our Diocese. We are grateful to the staff at the Office of the Bishop for their creativity in designing such an accessible and creative way to assist us all to enter more fully into the spiritual potential of the Jubilee Year. Each pilgrimage site also has a “stamp” that can be provided when you make a special pilgrimage to the site.
On Thursday, 13 February 2025, Australia commemorated the 16th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. In 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd presented this apology in the Australian Parliament which was a momentous occasion of recognition and reconciliation in our nation's history.
At St John's, we are committed to walking together with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers in a spirit of true reconciliation. One way of expressing this commitment is to acknowledge this apology in our school community. Thank you to Mrs Melissa McEntee, who planned a special prayer ceremony that students engaged in on Thursday morning.

Whole School Liturgy and School Leaders Induction
On Friday 7 February, we celebrated a very prayerful and reverent Mass with the whole school community, parents and carers and the St John's Parish to celebrate and give thanks for the 2025 school year and to commission our Year 6 Leaders. At this celebration of the Eucharist our student leaders were officially inducted to their significant student leadership roles for 2025.
Parents and Friends Executive Team for 2025
On Tuesday, 11 February, a number of parents and carers were able to join together for the St John’s Parents and Friends Committee’s Annual General Meeting and Term 1 meeting. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Parents and Friends Committee for their ongoing support. I would like to thank the outgoing Parents and Friends Executive Team on behalf of our staff and students and thank them for their years of support and dedication, especially with Fund-raising. It is through their initiatives that our students continue to access the curriculum through the provision of many resources, including Library Resources and Well-being Days.
A special thanks to Jodie Maloney for her leadership as the St John’s Parents and Friends Association President for the past year. Jodie has been instrumental in her role as the Parents and Friends President and I would like to personally thank Jodie for her support, care and amazing collaboration.
Congratulations to the following parents and carers who were appointed positions at the Annual General Meeting.
President: Jodie Maloney
Secretary: Renee Whiteside
Treasurer: Jamie Calder
St John's is very fortunate to have a culture of collaboration with parents and carers, and we will continue this collaboration in 2025, especially through the Parents and Friends Association.
St John’s Swimming Carnival 2025
On Tuesday, 18 February, students in Years 3 to 6 participated in the St John's Annual Swimming Carnival. Our students were very excited to participate in a planned community event. It was a fabulous day whereby our students exhibited the St John’s spirit and sportsmanship, encouraging each other to try their best.
Thank you to Mrs Michelle Atkins for her tireless work and excellent organisation of the event and to the amazing staff and parent helpers who supported Mrs Atkins.

New CEDoW Attendance Policy
In 2025, a new Attendance Policy will be implemented across all Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) schools to support regular student attendance. CEDoW schools, in partnership with families, are responsible for encouraging and supporting students’ consistent attendance at school.
Key Changes
Attendance Levels- New attendance levels have been established to address students’ attendance patterns:
- Regular Attendance: 90% – 100%
- Targeted Intervention: 71% – 89%
- Intensive Intervention: 70% and below
Schools are developing specific processes for each of these levels and will contact parents in various ways to encourage and support students’ consistent attendance at school. This may include:
- Daily absence notifications
- Weekly reminders for unexplained absences
- Telephone calls to:
- understand the student’s situation;
- discuss learning and support needs;
- set a time frame for attendance improvement;
- discuss unsatisfactory explanations for absences;
- Emails and letters.
Notification Requirements
Parents who intend for their child to undertake a period of extended absence (more than five days) for any of the following reasons must provide advance notice to the school by completing the Notification of Extended Absence form and submitting it to the Principal:
- Misadventure or unforeseen events;
- Participation in special events not related to the school;
- Domestic necessity such as serious illness of an immediate family member;
- Attendance at funerals;
- Travel within Australia or overseas;
- Participation in recognised religious festivals or ceremonial occasions.
Monitoring Attendance
Schools will track attendance on a fortnightly basis using monitoring spreadsheets. These will help assess overall school and individual student attendance levels, guiding actions and communications with parents.
Extended Absence
The term “Extended Leave” is now “Extended Absence” with updated procedures.
Travel-Related Absences
For extended absences due to travel, parents must submit the Notification of Extended Absence form along with relevant travel documentation. This documentation should include: Dates, locations of travel, Purpose and reasons for travel outside school holidays.
Acknowledgement of Extended Absence
After considering the explanation for the extended absence the school will issue an Acknowledgement of Extended Absence to the parent, regardless of whether the explanation for the absence is accepted or not accepted by the Principal. The acknowledgement may include agreed matters relating to the student’s learning and well-being. Accepted extended absences will be recorded as explained and Unaccepted absences will be recorded as unjustified.
Please see attached documents published by the Catholic Education Office Diocese of Wollongong regarding the new Attendance Policy and Procedures. Please contact the school office if you have any questions regarding attendance for your child.
Welcome Afternoon
It was a pleasure to join our kindergarten students and new students and their families at the Welcome Afternoon hosted by the St John's Parents and Friends Association on Friday 14th February. This was an opportunity for students, parents and carers and staff to connect and deepen relationships. Thank you to the Parents and Friends Executive for organising the barbecue and for the wonderful parent helpers who cooked and served the sausage sandwiches.

I look forward to joining Fr. Francis, the St John's staff and school community at the 9:30 am Mass on Sunday 23rd February to commission the Parish Catechists, St John's staff and the blessing of the backpacks for our kindergarten students.
Yours in Faith and Learning,
Michelle Rodwell
Principal
Commissioning of our Year 6 Student Leaders and our Stage 3 Mini Vinnies Team
We proudly congratulate our 2025 Student Leaders and Mini Vinnies Team, who were commissioned at our Opening School Mass last Friday. It was a special celebration where we asked for God’s blessings upon these students as they take on their roles of leadership and service.
Our Student Leaders will inspire and guide our school community, while our Mini Vinnies Team will lead initiatives to support those in need, living out our Josephite values with kindness and compassion.
May they be guided by faith, courage, and a heart for service throughout the year ahead as they make a positive impact in our school and beyond.
Invitation to Commissioning Mass - 9:30am, Sunday 23rd February 2025
We warmly invite our St John’s community to join us for our Staff and Catechist Commissioning Mass, a special celebration where we come together in faith to ask for God’s blessing on those who guide and nurture our students. A special invitation is extended to our Kindergarten children, as they embark on their St John’s journey. During the Mass, Father Francis will offer a special blessing for our youngest learners, asking for God’s protection and guidance as they begin this new chapter. We ask that all Kinder children bring along their backpacks, which will be included in the blessing as a symbol of their learning and growth. We look forward to sharing this meaningful occasion with our school family.
Reconciliation Sacrament Dates
The Reconciliation Preparation Program has become. For those children in Years 3 or older who have been baptised and would like to make their First Reconciliation, please see the attached information that was also shared last week via Compass.
Thank you from St Vincent de Paul
I recently received an email from our local St Vincent de Paul society that I wanted to share with our school community:
The members of the St Vincent de Paul Conference in Dapto sincerely thank St John's School students, their families and school staff for their generosity and wonderful support for our Christmas Appeal. The food items collected from St John's students and parishioners made up the bulk of our food hampers. THANKYOU!
The collections at the Christmas Masses and additional donations received leading up to Christmas totalled $4381.55 - a truly wonderful response!
The Dapto Conference was able to assist 106 families with Christmas hampers and we provided toys for 171 children in need in the Dapto area.
A HUGE THANKYOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND CONTINUED SUPPORT.
2025 Jubilee Year ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
As we continue on the sacred journey of the 2025 Jubilee Year, themed Pilgrims of Hope, we are invited to deepen our faith, renew our hearts, and walk together in hope. This Jubilee is a time of grace, calling us to prayer, reflection and acts of love and mercy. Let us unite as a school community, embracing the spirit of pilgrimage in our daily lives, seeking Christ in one another, and trusting in God’s endless love. May this year be a time of renewal and blessings for all.
Father in heaven,
May the faith you have given us in your Son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
renew our commitment to a life as joyful and humble pilgrims of hope.
May the grace of the Jubilee strengthen in us the spirit of faith,
so that our works may always be rooted in you.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Prayer Intentions
We pray for all families in our school community who are in need of our prayers.
We pray for the needs of our country and our world.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us.
St John the Evangelist, pray for us.

If you are unsure as to whether you have a plan set up, please contact Tory Wilson at the school office.
Please remember that should you be facing financial challenges at this time you are able to apply for a school fee concession. Please contact the Catholic Education Office, School Fees Team.
Compass Insights - Reminder for Parent Action
Thank you to those parents who have already completed this via Compass Insights.
The following permissions need to be completed as soon as possible please
- 2025 Consent for the use of student/s image and/or work
- 2025 Acceptable Use of Technology
- 2025 Consent for Walking Excursions
Please contact the office should you have any questions.
School Office Procedures - communication reminders
With over 600 students at the school, I am sure you can imagine the office is an extremely busy place! In order to be as efficient as possible, we would greatly appreciate your support in following these simple procedures.
Change to pick up arrangements - If your child needs to travel home a different way from what was communicated to them in the morning, please email or phone the school office before 2pm.
Absence - If your child is sick, please respond to the Compass message that is sent out on the day of the absence. You do not need to call the office, unless your child is going to be absent for more than 3 days or you are going on a holiday. If your child is going to be absent for more than 5 school days, please contact the office for a Notification of Extended Absence Form.
Late Arrivals/Early Leavers - if your child is being picked up early or arriving late to school, please do not enter this partial absence onto Compass. We will do this when you come into the office.
Early Leavers on a Friday afternoon - please note that assembly commences at 1.50pm. If you are collecting your child early on a Friday please endeavour to let us know prior to 1.45pm so we can arrange for them to come and wait at the office. We have no way to get hold of staff during assembly to send children up to the office.
Similarly if you are collecting your child during the school day, please be mindful of recess and lunch times as it can be a challenge to locate children on the playground. Recess is 10:30am - 11:00am and lunch is 1.10pm - 140pm.
Medical - if there have been any changes to your child's medical condition please email the school office as soon as possible.
If you have received an email or call about medication that has expired, please provide the new medication as soon as possible or email the office to advise if it is no longer required.
Change of details - if any of your contact details change eg email, phone numbers or postal address, please update this in Compass or email the school office.
Emergency Contacts - If your child needs to be picked up during school hours, the person collecting your child must be on the emergency contact list on Compass. If they are not on the list we will need your written permission for your child to go home with that person.
IMPORTANT - Students with a serious illness or Injury
If your child has had a serious illness or injury that has required medical treatment or hospitalisation, you will need to have a return to school meeting with a member of our Leadership Team prior to your child returning to school. This includes all fractures/broken bones/hospital stays. The meeting is to plan any adjustments necessary for the safety and wellbeing of your child and to discuss the date of their return to school. In certain circumstances, personnel from the Catholic Education Office may also be involved. Your child may also require a medical clearance certificate from the doctor.
Please contact the school office by phone or email to arrange a return to school meeting time.
Reminder: On regular uniform days, students must wear black leather shoes (not black sports shoes), while the sports uniform requires predominantly white sports shoes.
We warmly welcome our new Kindergarten students and their families to St John’s.
Together in partnership with you, we now join you in nurturing their growth and enabling many opportunities for them to thrive in their faith, learning, and wellbeing.
The Kindergarten students have enjoyed a very smooth transition into ‘big school’, beautifully supported by their teachers: Mrs McEntee, Mrs Scapin, Mr Soligo and Mrs Barker. It is delightful to see happy smiling faces, their readiness and excitement each day! We know our students will make special connections with new friends and feel a sense of belonging in our St John’s community.
The welcome assembly and BBQ was a great opportunity to begin to build these connections and it was lovely to meet some of our families. Thank you to all who were able to attend. We look forward to sharing other wonderful celebrations this year.

FRIDAY 28 February
Clean Up Australia Day was born in 1990. Almost 300,000 volunteers turned out on the first Clean Up Australia Day in 1990 and that involvement has steadily increased ever since. At St John’s we will be participating in Clean Up Australia Day for Schools Campaign on Friday 1 March. This day will involve our students learning about the impact of rubbish on their local environment while playing an active role in our community.
We ask for all students to bring in a pair of gardening gloves and / or tongs to pick up rubbish within and around our school environment.
Assembly in Weeks 4 and 5 will be under the Cola due to the installation of the new screen for the school hall.
Please visit our website to access our policies, procedures, and essential forms. These documents provide important guidance on our practices and expectations to ensure a safe and supportive environment. If you need assistance or have any questions, feel free to contact us.
Bus Safety Week – 17 to 23 February 2025
Key messages for families
- Families have an important part to play in keeping children safe around roads.
- Never drop off or meet your child on the opposite side of the road to the bus stop or call them across the road.
- Always drop them off or meet them on the same side of the road as the bus stop.
- Remind your children to always wait until the bus has gone before choosing a safe place to cross the road
- Talk to your children about Stop! Look! Listen! Think! every time they cross the road:
- Stop one step back from the kerb – Look continuously both ways
- Listen for the sounds of approaching traffic
- Think whether it is safe to cross and keep checking until safely across.
Car lines in both Jerematta and Werowi Street offer a convenient and safe drop-off and pick-up for families. For the efficient operation of this arrangement, there is a need for all parents/carers to adhere to road rules and our school practices, which have been developed with safety at the forefront of our planning. It is important that families accessing the convenience of car lines do so responsibly and safe manner.
Therefore, parents and carers are requested to;
- Display your family name upon approach.
- Follow the directions of staff at all times.
- Always move to the furthest most point in the designated drop-off and pick-up zone.
- Not queue, blocking traffic flow in surrounding streets and roundabouts.
Regular police patrols ensure the safety of all in and around school zones, if you are operating contrary to the signage, you risk a substantial fine.
To request a family nameplate, parents and carers are invited to complete the online form, by accessing the following link https://goo.gl/forms/L1KuKhqKB9Kj49wq1

Dear parents and carers,
We are seeking your help to support the students in our school with severe allergies.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life-threatening. The most common causes of anaphylaxis in schools are allergies to food and insects (bees). To help manage allergies, our school is following the National Allergy Council’s Best Practice Guidelines for Anaphylaxis Prevention and Management in Schools.
The Best Practice Guidelines recommend an Allergy Aware approach, which means we are supporting students at risk of anaphylaxis in the following ways:
- training staff
- educating students about allergies and anaphylaxis
- teaching students that we all have different needs and to be respectful of others
- teaching students the importance of getting help immediately if their friend with allergy looks sick.
For food allergies, we are also:
- encouraging students with food allergies to wash their hands before and after eating
- encouraging students to wash their hands after eating something their classmate or friend is allergic to
- teaching students not to share food with friends who have food allergy.
Food allergies are common in school aged children and avoiding the food is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction. Therefore, we have put a range of different things in place to help keep these students safe.
Students with a food allergy may react to tactile (touch) exposure or inhalation exposure. Not every ingestion exposure will result in anaphylaxis, but the potential always exists. Whilst peanut allergy is the most likely cause, eight foods (peanut, tree nut, milk, egg, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish) account for the vast majority of total food allergies.
Therefore, we have chosen not to allow peanuts, peanut paste, peanut butter (including “dippers”), nuts, “Nutella” spread or nutty muesli bars and egg within the school.
We ask you to support the school’s Allergy Aware approach so that we can increase safety and provide an environment that meets the needs of all our students.
Thank you for helping our school be “Allergy Aware”.

As the use of e-bikes and motorised scooters becomes increasingly popular among young people, it is essential that we work together to ensure the safety of students who use these forms of transportation.
While e-bikes and scooters provide a convenient way for children to travel, they also pose unique safety challenges, including risks associated with high speeds, interactions with traffic and pedestrians, inadequate protective gear, and a lack of awareness regarding road rules. To address these concerns, we encourage parents & carers to promote safe riding practices and educate students on the legal requirements surrounding e-bikes, motorised scooters, skateboards, and hoverboards.
