Dear Parents and Carers,
Yesterday, we welcomed our new kindergarten students for the first of two orientation mornings. Having attended our transition to school playgroup, they were very excited about having time in the classrooms with their teachers and support staff. Orientation will continue on Thursday 17 November (students only) between 9:00 - 11:30 am.
The end of the school year is rapidly approaching and our teachers are very busy preparing Semester 2 Reports, which will be available via Compass on Wednesday 7 December.
At this time of the year, children become increasingly excited about the approaching Christmas season. As a school, it is important that we keep firmly focused on learning and maintain our school routines throughout Term 4.
When Christmas cards, candy canes, and the like arrive too early, the children tend to ‘switch off’ from their learning. While it is acknowledged that children love to share the spirit of Christmas with their friends, it can be quite disruptive and unsettling, particularly when a child does not receive a card!
It is for this reason, and in keeping with the season of Advent, Christmas cards are not to be brought to school until Monday 12 December. This will give the students time to exchange cards and share this special time with their school friends. Thank you for your understanding and support.
Term 4 concludes for all students on Friday 16 December.
Parish Celebration Day
The annual Parish Celebration Day will be held this coming Sunday, commencing at 10:00 am with an outdoor Mass. Fr Francis warmly invites you to join in the celebrations as we come together to give thanks for our parish community. There will be food stalls, rides, entertainment as well as a coffee van available. It’s always a wonderful day of celebration and we look forward to seeing you.
Communicating with Teachers
The use of the Seesaw app is primarily to share and celebrate learning with parents and carers. In recent times, the conversation feature has been used by parents/carers to communicate important information to their child’s teacher. As teachers are in fact teaching, as well as undertaking duties during morning tea and lunch, it is unreasonable to expect them to be checking messages, replying and enacting requests. Important information about changes to a child’s afternoon dismissal arrangements is just one example where the use of Seesaw risks the message not being read and conveyed as requested causing upset for children, parents/carers and teachers.
For this reason, the conversation feature will be turned off and no longer accessible from Monday 21 November. Seesaw will only be used to share and celebrate learning.
To communicate with your child’s teacher, parents/carers should:
- Phone (42614611) or email (info@sjddow.catholic.edu.au) the school office regarding changes to afternoon pick-up arrangements or to request a meeting.
- Alternatively, email your child’s teacher directly to request a meeting. Teachers will reply within 2 working days, between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm only.
Thank you for your understanding and support. I’m sure that you can appreciate the importance of having clear and consistent protocols for communicating with the school.
Yours sincerely
Andrew Heffernan
Principal.
God gives me strength for what is necessary.

Feast of Christ The King - Sunday 20th November
The Church celebrates the Feast of Christ the King, also called the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, on the last Sunday of the Liturgical year. The season of Advent starts the Sunday after. This feast day is about looking at Christ the King as our ultimate leader. The most important part of leadership lies in love. Christ the king shows us that the ultimate power is the power of love. Regardless of what happened to him, Jesus Christ always loved. No one could stop him. His love continued to flow from the cross and reveal the mercy and power of God. The Feast of Christ the King serves to remind us of his love. We are urged not to lose our perspective. Through the power of love, we can effect change in our world and continue to create a life filled with forgiveness and mercy in a world where justice and peace reign supreme.
Season of Advent begins Sunday 27th November
Advent marks the beginning of the Church’s new year and is a season of waiting and preparation. This season of Advent focuses on Christ’s threefold coming—past, present and future:
- We await and prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas.
- We hope and give thanks for Christ’s presence within us and in the Word and sacraments.
- We look to the future, waiting for Christ to come again.
In the coming four weeks we prepare with mounting expectation for the coming of Christ in a spirit of waiting, conversion and hope.
